Kirkstall Abbey is a 12th century Cistercian abbey located just three miles from Leeds city centre. The ruined buildings are surrounded by a fair-sized open greenspace, which the locals seem to take full advantage of on a sunny day!
The bright sunshine and pale sky made for some tricky light!
Despite the park being full of picnickers, walkers, and sun-worshipers, the ruins themselves were fairly empty.
The floor says "Work and Prayer" repeated.
It is similar to many other abbeys and priories, but its location and open grounds seem to be the great appeal to residents of this busy industrial city. We've driven near it many times, and are glad we finally stopped to check it out- plus, it's free!
